Our name

Our name acknowledges the simple fact that, in the pursuit of positive impact, the most important questions, as well as the most insightful answers, sit in the grey areas.

We pride ourselves on leaning into the nuances and ambiguities whether they be about trade-offs (e.g. between financial and social returns), measurement (e.g. what does ‘good’ look like and who gets to decide), value-add (e.g. was the good thing that happened due to my input or would it have happened anyway) or power (e.g. strategic versus trust-based philanthropy), and coming out wiser on the other side.

Our approach & philosophy

Impact-first: Every project we work on begins, proceeds and concludes with impact front and centre. This means, regularly stepping back from the work or taking a moment during a meeting to explicitly ask: What does this discussion / task / activity mean for long-term impact? It’s amazing how grounding this can be and how it can eliminate a lot of unnecessary noise, keeping everyone focused on the end goal.

True partnership: We are deeply collaborative in our approach, seeking to work closely with a variety of key team members and stakeholders on all projects. This recognises not only that every initiative has a multitude of interests, but also that a diverse range of perspectives and (lived) experiences lead to richer outcomes.

Patient urgency: We like this oxymoron. On the one hand, we believe patience is important. Change not only takes time, but it’s complex. Decisions need to be carefully considered and arrived at. At best, a hasty and poor decision leads to some yield loss; at worst, it can have negative impact outcomes. At the same time, we recognise that the problems our partners are working on are big. So we also operate with a sense of urgency, which doesn’t mean recklessly, but rather requires a constant focus on doing what is most value-additive and progressing towards results.

If this sounds like how you also like to approach social / environmental change, then we’d love to hear from you.

Our team

Abhilash Mudaliar

In 2005 I left a role in corporate Australia to join a start-up non-profit in India. Working with entrepreneurs and communities from low-income backgrounds all over the country was both deeply humbling and a transformative learning experience.

Since then, I’ve spent the past two decades in leadership roles at non-profits, philanthropic foundations and impact investment firms around the world. More details are available on LinkedIn.

Through Grey Area Partners, I seek to leverage my expertise in strategy, impact measurement, evaluation and design, and work with changemakers around the world to help them achieve the best impact outcomes they can.
